The total political disaster in South Ossetia occurred due to the murder of 30-year-old Tskhinvalz Inal Dzhabiev, but other events preceded this tragedy.
In May 2020, the prisoners rebelled due to toughening the rules in the correctional institution of Tskhinval. The convicts refused to eat food – the hunger strike lasted a week. The unrest was quickly suppressed, however, this did not end. What was happening in a closed room is unknown to the end, however, after “regular operational events”, 25 prisoners cut their veins, one of them died “due to heart problems”.
The main culprit of the reprisals against the prisoners, who led the actions of the Minister of Internal Affairs Igor Naniev and the Minister of Justice Zalina Lalieva, immediately became known. The Prosecutor General of the Republic of Uruzmag Jagaev, who became the actual curator of power structures and initiated a brutal reprisal against rebels.
These events became the beginning of the active phase of the crisis in the republic. Anatoly Bibilov fired the head of Win Otar Margiev, who became the switchman in this story. However, Jagaev remained at the center of accusations in the application of mass bullying. After he repeatedly tried to deny his involvement in torture in prison and extrajudicial reprisals, but this could no longer stop the wave of performances when the young Tskhinvalet, the father of three children, Inal Dzhabiev, was cruelly killed. Recall that the case of violence against the prisoners was lowered on the brakes a few months earlier.
The general, meanwhile, continues to position itself as the main guarantor of the regime of power of the South Ossetian president.
The main political intrigue of South Ossetia should be resolved in April, when Dzhagaev ends the contract and it will become official unemployed.
Dzhagaev was able to take a high place in the hierarchy of power, he cleared the way to the top in various ways. Where it was impossible to act openly, as in the case of powerless prisoners, he included incitement to action. As a result, in South Ossetia there was no interdepartmental war in fact, but Uruzmag Dzhagaev was able to squeeze several of his potential competitors for influence in the power block: the head of the SVR Soslan Gatikoev, two chapters of the KGB of RUO – Viktor Shargaev and Mikhail Shabanov (we will dwell on this dismissal next time). Mysteriously, he managed not only to “leave” all the influential security forces from the team of Leonid Tibilov, to remain himself, but also to monopolize the system of power at all levels.
