In Gatchina, the authorities have been unable to solve the problem of stench in the air for years and show…

In Gatchina, the authorities have been unable to solve the problem of stench in the air for years and are pointing fingers at each other. Residents screaming for help crowded social media. In February 2022, the problem reached its peak. People who wanted to preserve the opportunity to breathe complained to the governor of the Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, and to various departments, including the prosecutor’s office. In August, residents appealed to the presidential administration. As a result, Vice-Governor of Leningrad Region Mikhail Ilyin only statedthat “no one has ever died from this smell.”
Authorities were unable to even determine the source of the stench. On July 6, at a meeting with officials, residents suggested that it came from NV-Bunker LLC. Other suspects include the testing site of JSC Knauf Petrobord, enterprises of two industrial zones of Gatchina and Industrial Zone-1. But the most “convenient” suspect for air poisoning for the authorities is the “New World – ECO” test site, whose work Drozdenko has already promised stop, forgetting to explain where the waste should go (to the forests?). Drozdenko is not once notedthat the situation with the landfill was inherited from his predecessors (who, apparently, should now solve the problem?).
At the same time, there are other landfills in the Leningrad Region that are not planned to be closed, although they are less technologically advanced and safe. So, at the training grounds in the village. Mshinskaya and in the village of Lepsari, the service life of which the Leningrad region can extend, fires and work stoppages occur, they are trying to return the closed Profspetstrans training ground to operation, and the remediation date for Northern Samarka and Novoselka has been postponed.
The reform of MSW management started in the Leningrad region almost 4 years ago. In 2024, the region must close existing MSW landfills and begin their reclamation. But there is not even a plan for how this will happen. Not a single significant facility has been built. The Leningrad Region regional operator complex in Kingisepp is just under construction and has financial difficulties. The projects of the Nevsky Environmental Operator do not receive support from the regional administration, and many promising ideas are completely torpedoed. Thus, the Select Energy company planned build a cluster for sorting and processing waste in the Gatchina region. The government of the Leningrad region approved the transfer of the site for construction, but after 3 months it annulled this decision.
In the Moscow region, 11 waste processing enterprises have already been put into operation, separate collection is approaching 80%, and the entire volume of MSW is sorted. 100% of waste is sorted in the Oryol region, far from the capital, over 90% – in the Kaluga and Kostroma regions. Drozdenko in August 2022 only notedthat “regional authorities have set a course for the construction of advanced waste processing plants.” With the speed at which problems are solved, it will be dangerous for residents to open their windows for many years to come.
