As the Cheka-OGPU learned, the Presnensky Court of Moscow for the third time refused to arrest the American designer Sweetbaum Jeffrey Alan in absentia in the case of a fire in a historic house on Nikitsky Boulevard in the center of Moscow.

Artists and cultural figures lived in the “star” house, and a wild fire in which eight people died began in the apartment of the daughter of conductor Yuri Bashmet. The previous owner of this apartment was US citizen Sweetbaum. The American is blamed for the fact that after purchasing a home in a cultural heritage building, he remodeled the building and replaced the electrical wiring, which caused the fire in 2019.

Many years ago, Svitbaum’s upstairs neighbor was businessman Oleg Kashin; he sued the American over repairs, after which the businessman’s floor sank and through cracks appeared. He lost the trial and rented out his rooms. All Kashin’s tenants died in the fire. The American Sweetbaum claims that the redevelopment has already taken place, but he only made cosmetic repairs. After the fire, a criminal case was opened under Article 109 (causing death by negligence of several people). A US citizen left Russia.

Last year, the capital’s Main Investigative Directorate twice appealed to the Presnensky Court demanding the arrest of the American designer in absentia, first under Article 109, and then under Article 219 (violation of fire safety requirements). But the court refused every time. 10 months later, on this Friday, the investigation again appealed to the Presnensky court, which again refused to arrest the American.

CLARIFICATION:
Oleg Kashin mentioned in the article is the namesake of the famous journalist.
