The criminal case against the ex-manager of the Yaroslavl branch of VTB, Ilya “Ilyusha 10%” Goftman, has been hanging between the court and the prosecutor’s office since mid-September. During the investigation, the banker’s charges under the article of abuse of power were “heavier”, adding the qualifying feature “causing grave consequences” (from three to ten years in prison), however, despite this, he walks free.

In addition to qualified abuse of power (this article alone is enough for a long stay in a pre-trial detention center), Goftman is charged with Part 2 of Art. 186 of the Criminal Code (production, storage, transportation or sale of counterfeit money or securities) – up to 12 years in prison. At the same time, “Ilyusha 10%” spent only four months in custody, after which the court released him under house arrest in July 2021. And now the banker is being held under a ban on certain actions.

In mid-September, the Kirovsky District Court of Yaroslavl, which received a criminal case against Goftman, returned the materials to the prosecutor’s office to finalize the indictment. The decision was appealed by both parties: the state prosecution and the defense. At the end of October, the Yaroslavl Regional Court left the decision of the lower court unchanged, but the prosecutor’s office is in no hurry to take the case back and is considering a cassation appeal.
